On Sunday, August 24, 2008, at 10:45 PM, TSO began receiving reports that some outgoing email messages were not being delivered but were also not being bounced. Users also reported that some incoming messages were not being received but that the senders were also not receiving bounce messages. TSO has been investigating and has narrowed the issue down to email messages that contain html/http links in the message bodies that are being exchanged between GT email servers and external email servers.
We have tested that this is affecting email accounts on both CoC email systems, Exchange and Zimbra, and we have also received reports that this is affecting OIT Zimbra email accounts. Those who are using the CoC Exchange or Zimbra servers for SMTP do not seem to be affected for outgoing emails, but those who were using smtp.mail.gatech.edu reported that their outgoing email messages with the links were never delivered and never bounced.
We reported the issue to OIT. As of 4:15 PM, August 28, OIT, after changing the configuration of SOPHOS (anti-virus/anti-spam filter), believes the issue has been resolved and will be posting details soon.
