According to an announcement made by OIT at 9:19 AM on Thursday, June 19, 2008, shortly after 8:00 AM, the cooling for the Rich Building computer rooms failed. Due to heat buildup, OIT began shutting down test and development systems and services. At 10:16 AM, TSO was notified that production servers would be shutdown, also. At this time, they only plan to keep core network switches and routers and DNS services running until cooling can be restored.

The following services will be unavailable during this outage:

Main GA Tech website
Banner
Peoplesoft
Passport
Buzzport
Techworks
Sympa lists
GTAD authentication
T-Square
VMPS

Because they plan to keep DNS and the core network switches and routers up, CC services should continue to function normally. These include:

CC Exchange and Zimbra email
CC AD authentication
CC web site
Mailman lists

The States lab has been configured to use an offsite domain controller for authentication as a secondary to the GTAD, but OIT cannot guarantee that the networking equipment required to keep that connection up will be on.

We will continue to monitor this situation and provide updates as they become available.

Update: VMPS is down. TSO has received reports that computers in KACB configured through VMPS are losing their network connectivity or are unable to connect when they are turned on.

Update: OIT reports that Facilities was able to restore limited cooling, so some services, such as the network backbone, DNS, and email, remain available (other than those Spectrum users on the rock mailstore). They tell us that as of 11:50 AM, the situation has stabilized, and they don't anticipate taking down any more services. However, they anticipate that it will be after 3:00 PM before complete cooling will be restored and services that were shut down can be brought back up.

Update: Full cooling was restored to the Rich Computer Center at 2:30 PM on June 19. OIT staff are in the process of bringing up all shutdown services, a process that should be completed later this evening. If you have any questions, please contact the OIT Customer Support Center at 4-7173.
