WHAT HAPPENED?
OIT updated the rule-set on the anti-spam system for MyGaTech/Zimbra to include spam/phishing filtering on outgoing email, blocking messages that receive a score of 90% or above.

WHEN DID IT HAPPEN?
At 11:00 AM, Tuesday, April 2, 2013.

WHY DID IT HAPPEN?
GA Tech email servers were blacklisted due to outbound spam/phishing emails from a successfully-phished account.  The anti-spam correctly tagged the offending emails, but no outbound drop rules were in place.  In order to better protect the campus from such incidents, the rules were enabled.

WHO WAS AFFECTED?
CoC faculty, staff, and student MyGaTech/Zimbra email users.  The Exchange server for CoC faculty and staff was already scanning outbound messages and is not affected by this change.

WHAT DO YOU NEED TO DO?
Most users should not notice a change.  If an email is blocked by the filter, the sender will receive a message similar to the following.  Affected users should contact the TSO Help Desk or OIT.

Sample message:
The message you attempted to send from your Georgia Tech email account has been detected as spam and/or phishing.  If you feel this is a mistake, please contact the OIT Technical Support Center (404-894-7173) (M-F, 8a - 5p).  If this is an emergency, please contact the OIT 24-hour Operations Center (404-894-4669).

WHO SHOULD YOU CONTACT FOR QUESTIONS?
The OIT Technology Support Center (404-894-7173, support@oit.gatech.edu) or the TSO Help Desk (CCB 148, 404-894-7065, helpdesk@cc.gatech.edu).
