WHAT HAPPENED?
Malware taking advantage of a critical Windows software vulnerability is spreading around the world and has already infected thousands of computers.

WHEN DID IT HAPPEN?
Friday, May 12, 2017, and ongoing.

WHY DID IT HAPPEN?
The malware/ransomware known as WannaCry/WannaCrypt is infecting unpatched Windows systems.  This particular ransomware does not require user interaction to initiate the attack.  More information can be found here: http://www.latimes.com/world/europe/la-fg-europe-ransomware-attack-20170515-story.html and here: https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/the-switch/wp/2017/05/15/how-to-protect-yourself-from-the-global-ransomware-attack/.

WHAT DO YOU NEED TO DO?
It is strongly recommended that all CoC faculty, staff, and students ensure their Windows computers are fully patched and updated.

HAS THE PROBLEM BEEN RESOLVED?
Yes.  Microsoft released a security patch in March 2017 for supported operating systems (https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4013389/title).
